Storage of 24k AU Coins--maple leafs, buffalos, etc

Does anyone have any suggestions on storing 24K AU Coins? I've been ordering Au Maple leafs (various years) recently from APMEX and having them sent to my parent's house (I'm out of the country). Do these normally come in protective plastic from APMEX? How do you store them? Airtites, coin flips, the paper and plastic staple type holders? I know that they are bullion coins but I prefer to limit scratches and dings if possible. Up to this point, my only gold holdings are a few Eagles and a couple Sovereigns and do not not how to deal with these .999 coins (especially when I'm not around to take possession).

It's exceedingly important to prevent three-nine and four-nine gold coins from becoming scratch, dented, or otherwise marred.

Store them snuggly packed in a ridgid container so that they can't move around. And if you handle one make sure you wear thin gloves or use some other cloth/paper device to prevent your fingers from touching it, and hold the coins by the edge only.

I order airtites from a guy on ebay for less than $1 each. When you order from APMEX go to the coin supply page and order the airtites when you purchase the gold, the work perfectly. I have them at 32mm for American Buffallos, 30mm for maple leafes and 37mm for the austrian philoharmonics.

When I order various year maple leafs from APMEX they always have a couple f small scrathes. Have you been able to check any of yours out?

They need to be stored in a temperature controlled environment to prevent expansion and contraction, which will cause them to wear completely out over time. The humidity must also be EXACTLY 32.2%, or lower, to prevent mold growth on your coins. Of course, security is a must as well.

As near as I know, there is only one such secure, controlled environment east of the Mississippi, and that just happens to be located at my house.

PM me for a special shipping container and instructions.

Our special this month is "Pay me to store 20, and I'll let you store another 10 for free !"

those plastic flips work fine for me. thrown loosely into a wooden box. the buffalo from apmex comes in the mint plastic and a flip. i have heard that the mint's packing is pvc though, might want to take it out and just put it in a standard coin holder.

btw, what does pvc do to gold? i've heard it's bad but not why it's bad.

Since I have some Austrian Philharmonikers, Canadian Maple Leafs, and a US Buffalo, I bought airtites for them. Brent-Krueger has airtites that are designed to fit specific-sized coins. You can see them here: http://www.brent-krueger.com/airtite.html

If that won't work, I'm sure TN...Andy can arrange "safe" storage for you! :applause_

Crap, it went bad.

Gold, as everyone knows, is a heavy metal (it is heavy, isn't it?), and everyone knows that heavy metals are bad for the environment.

Send it to me, and I'll dispose of it. I'm such a nice guy that I won't even charge you. You better send any gold or silver coins that were next to it as well, so that the infection doesn't spread.

That storage part cracks me up! :D

I am curious about the mold part since I have never heard about that before. Out in here in the desert, I seriously doubt there is any risk of that. I wonder what someone should do that lives in a very humid climate or what that guy should do to get the mold of his coin?

I don't think it will, that one was stored separately from the others. Whew! :D

No, it came from a reputable source, but who knows where it's been prior to that? I don't know if I should do anything to it or not, it's not like you see something like this every day, in fact until TN Andy mentioned it I had never seen anything like it. :hmmmm: I wonder what such a coin with (obviously rare?) "organic toning" would fetch on ebay....

Silver coins can tarnish - but Gold is immune to this in most enviroments.

*Humidity - no problemo
*Containers - just make sure it's cyanide free
*Oils from your skin do not harm Au
*Gold is very vulnerable to thieves though.....stay away from the 5-finger snatchers lurking about.....usually a lock-n-key box works fine
*Air - no problemo even if it's smog or heavy ozone

Anyhow - I store mine in salt-water containers and I love to take them out and rub them off with my greasy fingers.....it's so cooool - like a pirate !

Hell, even the swimmin' pool chlorine won't hurt 'em !!!
